Overview
Gunther Glick and Chinita Macri are detained by the Swiss Guard after Glick turns an overheard security update into a sensational global broadcast about a mysterious “11th Hour Samaritan.” Glick’s hunger for fame pushes him beyond reporting into wild accusations about the Illuminati, CERN, and hidden symbols, highlighting how the Vatican crisis is being distorted by media spectacle.
The chapter shifts briefly away from Langdon and the murders to show the public narrative spinning out of control. Glick’s report introduces the idea of an unknown last-minute helper while also spreading misinformation that may complicate the already chaotic response.
Summary
Inside the Swiss Guard office, Gunther Glick and Chinita Macri sit in a holding tank after their latest broadcast. Glick is exhilarated, convinced he has achieved the greatest scoop of any reporter’s career by broadcasting the camerlegno’s address, images of the murdered cardinals and Pope, and the live antimatter countdown.
The reason for their detention is not the sanctioned coverage but Glick’s unsanctioned follow-up. After overhearing Commander Rocher tell guards that a mysterious caller might have information that could help resolve the crisis, Glick secretly put Macri back on camera and announced that an unknown savior was coming to Vatican City, branding him the “11th Hour Samaritan.”
Glick’s broadcast then veered into speculation. He publicly suggested that former President George Bush might be connected to the Illuminati, and he argued that CERN could be the modern hiding place of the brotherhood because of its secrecy, funding, timing, antimatter research, and supposed symbolic clues.
Macri angrily warns Glick that his claims are reckless, potentially slanderous, and not journalism. Glick dismisses Macri’s criticism as jealousy and congratulates himself for interpreting CERN’s logo as Illuminati imagery, including duality, a pentagram, and hidden sixes forming 666.
Rather than reconsidering, Glick grows more excited by his own theories. Glick wonders whether CERN might also conceal the legendary Illuminati Diamond, imagining another exclusive mystery he could expose that night.
