Chapter 6

Acker enters a spare bedchamber he keeps untouched, lingering over Jovie’s old sketch and robe, exposing his unresolved longing and bitterness. He admits he repeatedly returns to these mementos to soothe an overwhelming need to see her.

Removing his mangi stones, Acker awakens his metal magic and recalls how he built a tolerance by ingesting powdered stone, allowing him to push through the Bond’s suppression. He notes Irina’s increased presence since their recent fight and that he waits for her to sleep before attempting the connection.

Extending along the tether, Acker reaches Jovie’s billet and finds her asleep at her desk, half-washed after battle, the mangi stones at her throat visible. He studies her, torn between pain and desire, and laments that he cannot smell her true scent through the Bond.

Overwhelmed, Acker presses his mouth to Jovie’s throat, nearly giving in to bloodlust and the urge to bite. A faint groan from Jovie snaps him back, and he retreats, his oath burning in his chest as a reminder of her power over him.
