Chapter 19

Overview

Acker, sailing secretly to Maile with Wells and a furious, pregnant Olivia, confesses his father’s lifelong manipulation and resolves to kill him once he has support. He plans to leverage Olivia’s asylum to reach Maile and perhaps reconcile with Jovie, while reflecting on the Bond that ended intimacy with Irina.

Summary

On a river ship bound for the sea, Acker endures Olivia’s relentless anger as Wells tends to his pregnant wife. Because Olivia’s hostility silences Wells, Acker and Wells meet in secret on deck at night to talk. Acker admits he has long been manipulated by his father, a realization sharpened after Jovie took the king’s magic and Kenta plunged into unrest.

Acker recalls refusing his father’s order to massacre the murdered council’s remaining families, a defiance that made the king see Acker as an enemy. Accepting that he must eventually kill his father, Acker resolves to do so only after securing an army. He outlines a plan to reach Maile quietly, using Olivia’s intention to seek asylum—news he learned by intercepting a bird between Olivia and Jovie—to justify approaching Maile’s palace.

Wells challenges Acker on how he will handle Jovie; they debate seduction versus groveling as both tactic and truth. Acker remembers his wedding night with Irina, when the Match Bond flooded him with Jovie’s anguish so powerfully that he broke off the act and never touched Irina again. The memory reinforces both his emotional tie to Jovie and the limits of appearances while he negotiates for allies in Maile.
