Chapter 11

Overview

Acker projects through the Bond and witnesses Jovie’s brutal cave assault, briefly intervening before Irina’s call pulls him back. Torn between oath and feeling, he shuttles along the tether for hours, observing Jovie’s fearlessness and healing. He finally accepts he cannot abandon her, raising personal and strategic stakes.

Summary

Acker’s Bond-projection drops him into the dark cave where Jovie carves through Strou warriors with a glowing blade and a companion at her side. He silently disarms and kills a warrior, sowing confusion that briefly eases pressure on Jovie.

Irina’s worried call yanks Acker back to his chambers, where he tears off his mangi stones and flees into a hidden passage before returning along the tether. He fights rising panic as he observes Jovie’s ruthless precision and the absence of fear he’s seen doom other soldiers.

When Jovie senses his presence, Acker retreats again to avoid distracting her. He wrestles with the blood oath’s pain and his own motives, unsure whether fear of retribution or deeper feeling drives him.

A fresh spike of Jovie’s pain drags him back; he sees a gash open on her cheek and then seal as she continues fighting. Time blurs into hours of shuttling between bodies, fatigue mounting as Acker monitors the battle through the Bond.

Confronted with the likelihood of her death and its cost to him, Acker concedes a hard truth: despite everything, he will never abandon Jovie. The admission reframes his obligations and tightens the Bond’s hold as the cave battle rages on.
