Chapter 53

Overview

At a volatile alliance dinner, Wren exposes a deception around Irina, prompting Fredrich to assassinate Edmond. Wren then compels King Chryse to kill himself and subdues the room, unveiling an unconscious Jovie as leverage.

Acker secures Irina’s release but must halt his forces as Evelyn invades. Wren claims Acker forfeited the throne to Kai, setting a decisive standoff.

Summary

Irina is paraded before the assembled leaders, shackled and hooded. Wren tests her, asks her to expose those who have stolen magic, and then reveals a deception tied to her presentation, enraging Edmond. As the gathering reels, Fredrich strikes, driving a hearthstone blade through Edmond’s back and beheading him on the dais.

Seizing control, Wren declares the court filthy and, lacking Irina’s help, assumes universal guilt. When Chryse protests, Wren goads him, dodges a lightning strike, and uses his influence to force Chryse to drive a dagger into his own skull. Panic erupts, but Wren freezes the entire room with a single command, proving the overwhelming reach of his gift.

Wren then reveals his leverage: Jovie, carried in by Alaha guards and left breathing but unresponsive. Acker kills the guards and threatens Wren, who warns that harming him will leave Jovie asleep. Acker forces a concession—Irina and Regent Bru are released—while Fredrich stands ready to strike.

Hallis arrives with urgent news that Evelyn is invading the city. Fearing Evelyn’s reaction if she finds Jovie like this, Acker moves to order a stand-down. Wren interjects, asserting that Acker forfeited his claim to the throne under an agreement with Kai. Acker counters that the agreement included Wren’s death, and the chapter ends with both men poised for battle as invasion looms.
