Chapter 51

Overview

Acker releases Jo and guides her through hidden passages to escape during the leaders’ dinner. Fredrich covertly arms her at the vine-hidden gate while Messer scouts. In the city, Wren’s forces ambush them, downing Messer with a hearthstone arrow. Wren suppresses Jo’s magic, claims opposition to Edmond, and renders Jo unconscious.

Summary

Acker wakes Jo for their planned escape and removes her filigree leash. He outfits her in a heavy coat and returns Beau’s metal rope, then outlines the route to the vine-hidden passage on the palace wall where Messer will signal safety. They affirm their plan and parting promise: Jo flees first and will fall back if Acker does not follow.

They navigate secret corridors past dead guards and descend through service passages to the kitchens. Before releasing Jo outside, Acker confesses his love and teases about serving under her crown, steadying them both. Jo slips into the cold night toward the concealed exit.

At the wall, Fredrich reveals himself beneath the poisonous vines, quietly equipping Jo with a sword belt. After he departs unhindered, Jo squeezes through a narrow gate gap and follows Messer’s overhead guidance across dim streets, using alleys and backtracking to avoid patrols.

As the routes tighten with repeated patrols, Jo senses a trap. An arrow suddenly strikes Messer; the hawk crashes to the stones, bleeding from a black-tipped (hearthstone) shaft. Surrounded by twelve men led by Wren, Jo reaches for the Bond only to find it smothered by the mangi stones and then tries to summon light.

Wren orders her to stop and lethargy dulls Jo’s magic. He claims Edmond is pushing a “magic-sucking” agenda and that Wren aims to stop him, reframing his past power plays as resistance. With Jo outnumbered and Messer down, Wren ends the confrontation by commanding her to sleep, leaving Jo unconscious and captured.
