Chapter 40

Overview

In a tense, rain-lashed meeting, Kai and Aurora arrive to negotiate. Jo takes the lead, but Kai demands Acker surrender Kenta’s throne as the price for alliance. Fredrich proves immune to compulsion, rattling Kai, yet he still refuses. Departing, Kai warns that Chryse may join Edmond if his father is banished.

Summary

As a storm pounds the cottage, Jo, Acker, Messer, Fredrich, and Irina wait for Kai’s arrival. Irina reveals Acker refused to consummate their marriage after the wedding night, shifting Jo’s understanding of their past. Acker senses an approaching carriage; weapons are placed within reach, and Jo joins Acker at the door despite her nerves.

Kai arrives with Aurora. Messer prompts Jo to preside, and Acker conspicuously demonstrates calm control. Jo opens negotiations, but Kai clarifies he wants alliance with Jo and Strou while demanding Acker cede Kenta and ultimately rule Roison to resettle his people. Jo and Acker reject surrendering Kenta, proposing integration and new boundaries instead.

Tension spikes as Kai questions Acker’s motives and taunts their relationships. Jo briefly glimpses Acker’s violent impulse but steadies the room. To test claims about resisting influence, Kai orders Fredrich to stop breathing; Fredrich remains unaffected, proving immunity and unsettling Kai.

Despite this, Kai reiterates his condition and refuses the alliance, to Aurora’s visible frustration. Jo keeps diplomacy, ending talks without agreement. At the door, Kai warns that Chryse plans to seek Edmond’s support if his father is banished, signaling a shifting alliance landscape.

After Kai departs, Irina’s laughter over Fredrich’s defiance breaks the tension, though Jo notes Acker’s lingering unease, hinting at fraying control beneath his composed exterior.
