Chapter 50
Overview
Jo awakens to a shaken Acker, who reveals his father killed Vad and forced Acker to drink Vad’s oracle-charged blood. After days confined under watch, Jo, Acker, and Messer finalize an escape-and-assault plan.
Messer finds a weak spot in the west wall; during a leaders’ dinner Jo will slip out to lead the western offensive, while Fredrich remains with Acker. The plan raises stakes as prisoners are shifted to the mines and the palace tightens control.
Summary
Jo wakes as Acker returns, blood-spattered but uninjured, and refuses to let her see him wash. He holds her through the night, sleepless and shaken. By morning he explains: his father killed Vad and forced Acker to drink Vad’s blood infused with stolen oracle magic, an act that leaves him disturbed and grim.
Days pass with Jo leashed in Acker’s chambers under palace scrutiny. Messer keeps her company in shifting animal forms while Hallis brings food but shares nothing. Acker comes and goes late, their Bond intensifying; despite closeness, he avoids escalation, and Jo wrestles with fear and dwindling time.
One night Acker and Messer watch prisoner transfers to the mines from the terrace. Soon after, Acker remains at dawn, signaling a turn: Messer has found a weak point in the west wall. Acker orders Jo to escape the city and lead the western charge while he faces court, aligning their efforts from two fronts during an upcoming dinner of alliance leaders.
Jo resists being escorted by Fredrich; after a tense back-and-forth—Messer backing Jo—Acker relents. Messer will guide Jo to the west gate just before the dinner and double back; Fredrich will remain with Acker. Acker also directs Messer to hidden hearthstone weapons under Wells’s floorboards, shoring up the plan’s resources.
With their roles set—Jo to lead the valley force, Acker to attend the perilous dinner wearing mangi stones that block their Bond—they choose closeness over further argument. They share an unhurried, intimate night, then lie awake contemplating the fragile plan, aware that nothing ever goes exactly as intended.
