Chapter 54
Overview
Jovie dreams of childhood with Acker until he forces her awake. She learns Messer is dead and that Wren escaped after leveraging her unconsciousness. Acker has slaughtered the council, retrieving his father’s slatstone, while Evelyn advances after Kai’s betrayal. Jovie, Acker, and Fredrich arm up to stop Wren and repel Evelyn.
Summary
Jovie drifts in a lucid childhood memory at a creek with young Acker, their teasing about marriage turning into a playful search for flecks of gold. The scene shifts as Acker insists she “wake up,” his boyish features becoming the man she loves, signaling the dream’s collapse.
Jovie jolts awake on the dais beneath a golden ceiling. She immediately asks after Messer and, recognizing the truth in Acker’s expression, breaks down as she accepts Messer’s death. Acker urges her to fight—for Messer, for him, and for the land—reigniting her resolve against Wren.
Acker explains Wren fled, knowing Acker wouldn’t risk Jovie’s life to kill him, and that Evelyn is marching on the city after Kai’s betrayal. Jovie rises to act. She notices the dining hall strewn with the council’s corpses, blood leading back to Acker. Acker searches his dead father’s body and takes a gray slatstone, confirming he executed the complicit council.
Acker levitates swords from fallen soldiers, arming himself and Jovie. He orders Jovie to stay with Fredrich as they move, acknowledging Wren has declared war and expects to lead the assault personally. They vow to kill Wren upon sight. Acker warns that if he finds Kai first, there will be no mercy.
The trio leaves the hall toward the kitchens, aligned: hunt Wren, hold the line against Evelyn’s invading forces, and keep Jovie protected while confronting the cascading betrayals.
