Chapter 26: Julia
Overview
Julia flees the chaotic set, seeks clarity at her father’s grave, then finds Emmett waiting at Martha’s Diner. They acknowledge Richard is monitoring them, agree to stop, and decide Emmett must keep Evelyn to appease production. Emmett urges Julia to try a blind date, and they separate on a heartbreaking note.
Summary
Julia leaves the set after ensuring the bar and Romance Ranch logistics are handled, resisting the urge to watch Emmett navigate producer-driven drama. Overwhelmed, she drives aimlessly through the valley and confides her confusion at her late father’s gravesite, admitting her growing desire for Emmett and the stress of the show.
Hungry and steadier, Julia heads to Martha’s Diner and discovers Emmett has been waiting for up to two hours without his phone. They settle into a booth as Martha teases them, and playful banter eases the tension before Emmett warns they must be careful.
Julia reveals Richard is likely tracking them and tried to recruit Emmett to keep her “on track.” She emphasizes the stakes: her first job and future career, and Emmett’s need to finish the show for his grandparents. Emmett admits he regrets joining but feels obligated to see it through.
To protect themselves, Julia proposes they pretend nothing happened. Emmett agrees it’s risky but doesn’t believe it’s for the best. Turning to strategy, Julia insists Emmett keep Evelyn to satisfy Richard. Emmett, who eliminated Cookie, begrudgingly agrees despite disliking Evelyn.
Emmett then urges Julia to go on the blind date Riley arranged, arguing it’s safer and noting his contract bars public dating for a year. Julia, hurt, recognizes he’s pushing her away for her sake. They eat in strained silence, then share a tight hug outside. Emmett gives her a brief, chaste kiss on the head and leaves, feeling like a goodbye.
Julia drives home in tears, devastated that someone as good as Emmett believes she’ll easily move on, even as they both choose distance to avoid destroying their futures.
