Chapter 17: Julia
Overview
Shaken by the elimination fallout and Evelyn’s pursuit, Emmett hides in Julia’s car and begs for an escape. Julia and Emmett flee to a diner, share an all-night conversation that exposes vulnerabilities, and forge a deeper connection. By morning, they tacitly choose each other’s company, shifting their dynamic beyond colleagues.
Summary
After exchanging brief, distant texts with Theo, Julia leaves the set exhausted and conflicted about Emmett’s discomfort with the show. Driving past the Brandt farmhouse, she’s struck by Leon and Tina’s tender dance and her own loneliness, then heads to her familiar late-night diner.
In the parking lot, Emmett startles Julia by revealing he hid in her back seat to escape the elimination chaos, Evelyn’s advances, and manufactured drama. Julia scolds him for scaring her, but recognizes his need for distance from the cameras and pressure.
They enter the diner, where Martha seats them. Banter gives way to candor: Emmett admits frustration with the show and jealousy of Theo’s upbeat nature and legacy, contrasting it with his own upbringing. Julia shares her grind—work, graduate studies, and avoidance of dating—while Emmett needles her playfully, revealing attraction.
Over coffee and Julia’s signature omelet (including pineapple, which Emmett gamely embraces), they unwind. Conversation ranges from family and work to grudges and insecurities, including Emmett’s dislike of Rhett and wariness of Catherine’s morbid interests. The easy flow dissolves their tension.
By sunrise, both are surprisingly energized by the connection. Emmett suggests taking Julia to his favorite breakfast, and Julia agrees, signaling a mutual step beyond professional boundaries and setting up new stakes against the show’s constraints.
