Chapter 39: Julia
Overview
On the eve of the final elimination, Julia’s nerves spike and she slips off-set for a drive. At the farm gate, she blocks Carl’s entry and endures his abuse until Oma Tina arrives with a rifle and forces him to leave. Afterward, Tina validates Julia’s bond with Emmett, intensifying Julia’s feelings and the stakes ahead.
Summary
Julia feels jittery as the final elimination nears. Richard’s unsettling calm and Emmett’s intimate interview about falling in love linger in her mind. To steady herself, she leaves set for bubble tea, hoping distance will ease the pressure of what comes next for her and Emmett.
At the farm gate, Julia encounters Carl’s truck. Refusing to let him onto the property, she blocks the entrance and pretends her car has stalled. When Carl approaches and claims Emmett invited him, Julia calls his bluff. Carl responds with crude, demeaning insults aimed at both Julia and Emmett.
Before the situation escalates further, Oma Tina appears with a hunting rifle, orders Carl off the property, and threatens to shoot if he persists. Faced with Tina’s unwavering resolve, Carl retreats to his truck and leaves, his attempt to intrude thwarted.
In the aftermath, Tina tells Julia she did well and speaks candidly about letting loved ones make mistakes. She praises the change she’s seen in Emmett and implies he’s smitten, crediting Julia for helping him. Buoyed and shaken, Julia heads out for bubble tea, her anxiety sharpened by the confrontation and the looming finale.
