Chapter 40: Emmett
Overview
After filming a date with Evelyn, Emmett is summoned by producer Richard, who reveals surveillance photos proving Emmett’s secret relationship with Julia, including images from inside Emmett’s cottage. Richard threatens Julia’s career and enforces Emmett’s contract to force more drama in the final week. Emmett leaves shaken, fearing this may be his last night with Julia.
Summary
Emmett finishes recording a candlelit date with Evelyn while struggling to keep his focus off Julia, who watches from the sidelines. He longs for the show to end so he can make things right with Julia, believing their time together may finally be near.
Before he can leave set, producer Richard orders Emmett to his office. There, Richard displays surveillance photos of Julia and Emmett together: outside the diner, at The Sugar Saloon, at the Cactus Club, and, most disturbingly, inside Emmett’s cottage—images implying a hidden camera without consent.
Richard weaponizes the evidence, threatening to ruin Julia’s career and to enforce Emmett’s contract prohibiting public dating for a year. He demands heightened drama and PG-13 intimacy for ratings during the final week, belittling Emmett’s motives and reminding him of the financial stakes and press obligations.
Shaken and trapped, Emmett weighs protecting Julia’s future against his own integrity and contract. He resolves to go to Julia, fearing that if he complies to shield her, tonight could be their last night together.
