Summary
Emmett heads down the gravel driveway toward the barn and spots Julia Silva working near the building she is prepping. He has to pass this site every morning, and her reliable, bright greeting has become part of his routine despite his reluctance.
He considers detouring by car but rejects it as wasteful and impractical, acknowledging he can’t avoid her. He’s irritated by how omnipresent Julia seems, working at all hours and appearing relentlessly productive—traits he associates with her brother.
