Chapter 5

Overview

Over breakfast, Gray orients Wren to the Dagger’s operations, revealing she was red-listed for execution in the wards. Wren meets core operatives and gauges mixed reactions, especially suspicion from some. The base’s volunteer-mission structure and wider network come into view, and tensions spike as a broadcast from General Travis is announced.

Summary

Gray escorts Wren to breakfast, praising her tests while clarifying she’s lucky to stay: there’s a red threat on her in the wards, meaning she was sentenced to die. Wren defends Cross, but Gray suggests Travis—and Cross’s position—bear blame. In the mess hall, Wren observes widespread telepathy among diners.

As they load food, Gray outlines the Dagger’s structure: civilians handle domestic work via valley shuttles; operatives live on base for intelligence, tech, research, and communications; field operatives train when not on missions. He proposes the shooting range for Wren. He explains missions are volunteer-only, with leads assigned by the Authority, and mentions Bramble Base in Ward H used for Point access.

Karra joins and pointedly kisses Gray, then leaves them to sit. At the table, Gray introduces Luisa (transport pilot), Karra (comms/recon), Neema (security, distrustful), Henley (pilot), Mako (sniper), and Evlynne (fighter pilot/sniper). Evlynne probes Wren’s connection to Lieutenant Xavier Ford; Wren insists he’s a friend who risked himself to help her escape.

Saint arrives, quiet and observant, welcoming Wren. Mako then launches into an exaggerated story about a stolen slice of rare Tierran gold-chocolate cake, accusing Raven Persimmons across the room, to the group’s mixed amusement and exasperation. The anecdote underscores the group’s camaraderie and Wren’s tentative integration.

The light mood breaks when the PA crackles on, calling all personnel to stand by for a broadcast from General Travis Redden, raising immediate tension and foreshadowing external conflict.
