Chapter 52
Overview
After a month of rare calm and deepening intimacy with Gray, Wren weighs Adrienne’s push for peace against Kallister’s warnings. The Authority then votes to open talks with the Company. Adrienne and Teriq schedule a covert parley with Travis Redden, and Wren volunteers for the mission despite Gray’s concern.
Summary
Over the next month, Wren and Gray settle into a steady rhythm of intimacy, training, and visits with friends, offering Wren her first taste of normalcy without constant fear. Around the Dagger, relationships ease: Tana and Luisa couple up, Karra likely sleeps with Henley, and Evlynne softens after deciding not to disclose her son’s bloodmark. Fiona relaxes restrictions, allowing Wren and Poppy more time together, though Poppy avoids the aviary.
One night, post-intimacy, Wren and Gray debate Adrienne’s peace initiative. Gray distrusts Travis Redden’s motives and warns that secret deals risk splintering the Uprising, potentially provoking internal backlash. Wren hopes peace is possible but concedes that goals and “reasonable” choices differ across sides.
By morning, tension crystallizes when field operatives are assembled. With Kallister absent and Fiona away at Bramble, Adrienne announces that the Authority has voted to open peace talks with the Company. She promises no agreement will proceed without a Dagger-wide vote and reveals a small, tightly controlled parley is set for that night.
Teriq is mission lead alongside Adrienne, with terms still to be set with Travis. Evlynne agrees to pilot, Declan will join from Bramble, and Teriq requests top cover. Karra volunteers; Orin is tapped for sniping; and Teriq recruits Mako and Wren. Despite Gray’s visible displeasure—he must remain at the Dagger due to leadership needs—Wren commits to the operation.
