Chapter 62
Overview
Cross hauls Wren from Valterra Ridge and steals an unlogged helicopter to escape. During their frantic flight, Cross reveals he thought Wren was dead after losing their telepathic link, though Wren still senses him. A fuel leak forces an ocean ditching, leaving them crashed at sea.
Summary
Cross pulls Wren back onto solid ground at Valterra Ridge, overwhelmed that she is alive. He hustles her into a stolen, unlogged helicopter, warning they will be tracked. Cross notices Wren’s gunshot wound and vows revenge later, prioritizing escape.
In the air, Cross chooses Heath’s End as a destination, unable to explain the urgent pull that compelled him to fly there. He confesses he believed Wren was dead because he hasn’t felt her telepathic energy for months. Wren, shocked, says Cross’s energy is still present for her.
As they process this, alarms blare: a fuel leak from a shot tank leaves them short of range. With power fading and rotors slowing, Cross banks desperately, grabs Wren, and braces for impact.
The helicopter slams into the ocean. Water floods the cabin as the aircraft spins and disintegrates, but Cross refuses to let go of Wren as they plunge into darkness.
