Chapter 47

Overview

Wren wakes in the medical bay after her heart stops at Mako’s party. Gray secretly runs toxicology, confirming heartroot poisoning, then deletes the results. They decide to keep it quiet, suspecting a targeted attack or mistaken bottle. When Fiona checks in, Wren and Gray lie, blaming stims.

Summary

Wren jolts awake in the medical bay, disoriented and in pain, recalling only Mako’s birthday and dancing with Gray before blacking out. Gray explains her heart stopped for four minutes and that Fiona resuscitated her. An echocardiogram looks normal, but Wren suspects poisoning.

They run a covert toxicology test using Gray’s system override to avoid alerts. Results confirm heartroot in Wren’s blood. Gray notes heartroot is stored in the bay for prisoner executions, but theft would be difficult. They debate potential culprits and consider that Wren might not have been the intended target.

Gray deletes the results and wipes the queue. Wren resolves to only drink what she pours and suggests using herself as bait if necessary. Gray vows to protect her.

When Fiona arrives, concerned, Gray and Wren conceal the findings, claiming the tox was clean and suggesting a stim-related cardiac episode. Fiona, alarmed by the mention of stims, ultimately accepts the explanation, while Wren and Gray keep their investigation secret.
