Overview
Wren arrives at the Uprising’s mountain base, where Grayson—once presumed dead—is revealed as a key leader. Xavier is detained despite aiding her escape. Wren grapples with a letter exposing her birth identity and her parents’ betrayal while secretly linking with Cross and learning Travis declared war. In the war room, she is stunned to find Uncle Jim alive.
Summary
During a turbulent helicopter approach, Wren fixates on a shocking letter: her birth name is Stella Hess and her parents were infamous Uprising traitors. Grayson—formerly Kaine Sutler, presumed dead—pilots them into the Uprising’s concealed Blue Dagger base. Upon landing, guards haul a handcuffed Xavier to the cells despite Wren’s protests; Grayson insists the Authority will decide his fate.
Grayson guides Wren through the heavily secured, multi-level facility, refusing to detail his own Mod abilities and confirming only Mods are allowed inside. He defends Adrienne’s mental takedown of General Redden as wartime necessity, forcing Wren to confront her own recent coercive killing of Jayde Valence.
In Grayson’s quarters, Wren showers and opens a telepathic link to Cross. Cross, under Travis’s new regime, reports chaos and surveillance, saying he can’t defect without being killed and that Travis has effectively declared war. Wren admits the letter about her parents and he urges secrecy to protect her.
Summoned to the Authority, Wren learns Grayson sits on the five-person council with Adrienne. As they enter the war room, Wren spots Adrienne and other leaders—and then reels at a final revelation: Uncle Jim, long believed dead and author of the damning letter, is alive.
