Chapter 57

In the Temple, Kallister reveals Wren’s hidden identity: Stella Hess, daughter of Marina Serrano and Jakob Hess, the Tin Block Traitors who bombed Valterra Ridge. Gray reels, connecting Wren’s mother to his family’s deaths, and feels betrayed that Wren knew during their visit to the Ridge but said nothing.

Wren insists she is not her parents and denies any ulterior motives regarding Adrienne’s fate, but Gray, hurt and furious, orders her to leave so he can discuss the upcoming vote with Kallister. Later, Saint confirms Gray vented his anger in the gym. Wren asks Saint about the vote; he is undecided but doubts Gray can be swayed. The mission leads convene, and Gray brushes past Wren’s plea not to let Kallister exploit the reveal.

While waiting, Wren briefly greets newly returned Mako, then withdraws. After the vote, Gray informs Wren the decision was nearly unanimous to enact Order Five and effectively disband the Authority, citing Adrienne’s civilian deaths; only two voted against. Gray refuses to discuss Wren’s secret further and leaves, devastating her.

Wren arranges for grieving Poppy to go down-valley with Luisa’s parents for safety and support. Overwhelmed, Wren seeks air, spots Kallister leaving after dark, and covertly follows him to the daggerstone cave where abilities fail.

From the shadows, Wren overhears Kallister telling Hawkins that, with Adrienne gone, sanctioning their “missions” will be easier without votes. Hawkins warns Gray won’t stomach what they’re doing, confirming a covert agenda that bypasses former Authority oversight.
