Chapter 61

Overview

Kallister abducts Wren, suppressing her abilities with white daggerstone, and reveals he is a precog who allowed recent tragedies to unfold. At Valterra Ridge, he moves to kill her. A Command helicopter interrupts; Wren is shot and left hanging off a cliff as Kallister flees. Cross arrives to pull her up.

Summary

Wren awakens groggy, bound in a hovercraft cabin, and discovers Kallister piloting. She cannot access telepathy or incitement. Kallister carries white daggerstone, nullifying her Mod abilities. He claims leadership requires one vision, defends killing Adrienne as necessary, and evades Wren’s demands about their destination.

Kallister flies to Valterra Ridge, armed and armored. On the cliff, he admits he foresaw the night’s events: Wren eavesdropping, Hawkins inciting Mako, Adrienne’s death, and Hawkins surviving a ridgehowler mauling. He reveals he is a precog and frames these outcomes as necessary steps, stating Wren’s influence over Gray and Saint endangers his plans.

Kallister declares he intends to kill Wren. A Command helicopter approaches, its lights flooding the ridge. Wren rushes Kallister; he shoots her in the arm and then fires at the helicopter. She lunges again, but Kallister drives her backward over the cliff.

Wren catches a ledge and hangs on, injured and powerless, while Kallister departs in the hovercraft. As she struggles, footsteps approach and a hand appears. Cross arrives, calling her “Dove,” and offers to pull her to safety.
