Chapter 51

Overview

Gray brings Wren to the ruins of Valterra Ridge and reveals it was his childhood home destroyed in the assaults that killed his family. He shares years of abuse by his uncle while his aunt did nothing. Wren withholds her mother’s culpability, offers support, and their relationship deepens as they return and sleep together.

Summary

Gray flies Wren to the daggerstone coast above Valterra Ridge, now mostly collapsed into the sea. He explains the crater lies underwater after an earthquake worsened the bombing’s destruction. Gray reveals this was his home and that Luisa’s parents helped him escape after his father died in the air strike and his mother and sisters were killed in the ground assault.

Wren nearly confesses that her mother catalyzed the operation but swallows the truth, wracked with guilt. Gray continues, choosing vulnerability to reciprocate Wren’s openness: after the massacre he lived with his aunt Jenni and uncle Taylor in the valley. Taylor, a healer and alcoholic, routinely beat Gray nearly to death and healed the injuries to hide the abuse.

Gray recounts a failed attempt to seek help when Fiona healed his poorly set arm, and his shame kept him silent. He reveals Jenni stood by, cleaned the blood, and never intervened. He rejects forgiveness, saying some things are unforgivable. Wren reaffirms that forgiveness is his choice and offers empathy and fierce loyalty.

They return to the Dagger in heavy silence. Seeking closeness and relief after the emotional exposure, they shower together and move to Gray’s bed. The encounter turns tender and intense as they finally let go of earlier self-imposed barriers. Wren expresses gratitude that Gray survived the explosion, and they make love, solidifying their bond.
