Summary
Gray takes Wren on a surprise date in a two-seat hovercraft, stopping midair above a lagoon that glows with bioluminescent “moonfish.” As the fish leap to feed, Gray confesses he has a crush, and Wren enjoys the tenderness, revealing it is her twenty-first birthday. They kiss but keep to their decision to go slow.
Back in her quarters, Wren is jolted by a familiar mental intrusion: Cross’s voice. She hears a tattoo gun and Cross instructing the artist to “make it hurt,” realizing he is getting a spine tattoo on her birthday, which unsettles her and undercuts the evening’s euphoria.
