Chapter 9
Overview
Kallister brings Wren to the hidden blue daggerstone Temple to train, where she fails to penetrate his formidable shield. He introduces Hawkins Jost, the only other known inciter, who will teach her to harness the rare gold frequency that bypasses shields, with Gray volunteering as a test subject. Locked out of further access, Wren calls Cross, and they confront the ethics and necessity of incitement, even fantasizing about running, exposing strain and longing in their separation.
Summary
Kallister meets Wren and takes her to a hidden lower level: a daggerstone cavern called the Temple, lined with blue daggerstone and an ancient marble chamber marked by religious symbols. He explains the space amplifies Mods’ abilities. Wren notes hostility on base after Fiona leaked her inciter status, and Kallister vows to address it.
In an alcove, Kallister has Wren attempt to breach his shield. The amplified setting highlights his impenetrable defenses; after over an hour, Wren is exhausted and fails to find a weakness. Citing mandatory rest after mental strain, Kallister pauses training.
Kallister introduces Hawkins Jost, the only other known inciter, to teach Wren to control “gold,” a rare manipulation frequency that bypasses shields and can covertly compel minds. Hawkins confirms Wren has been tapping gold without harnessing it. They strike a deal for his instruction, and Kallister names Gray as the volunteer “rat” for testing. Training is set for the next morning.
Later, access restrictions keep Wren from returning to the Temple or wider Operations, leaving her isolated and restless. Missing Cross, she reaches out telepathically. They discuss Kallister’s training plan and the morality of incitement; Cross says he would use it to survive, while Wren fears the violation of free will and her own capacity to cross lines.
The call turns tender and strained as they admit longing and briefly imagine running away. The conversation ends with unresolved tension—both wanting to be together but divided by danger, duty, and Wren’s impending mastery of a power that could redefine her choices.
