CHAPTER 83: JAMESON
Overview
Jameson follows Rohan’s clue about heights to Vantage’s cliffside clock-and-bell tower, where the next key appears to be hidden among dozens of decoys. Branford unexpectedly helps Jameson enter and follows him upward, suggesting a complicated shift in his family loyalties. Zella reaches the bell first, forcing Jameson to abandon caution, entrust Branford with the silver chest, and jump toward the next stage of the Game.
Summary
Jameson leaves the room ahead of the other players and tries to interpret Rohan’s warning that the next stage will involve heights. Searching for a better view of Vantage at dusk, Jameson realizes the estate is castle-like, with five turrets and a taller square tower at the back.
When Jameson circles behind Vantage, he discovers that the estate sits on a steep, flat-topped cliff nearly surrounded by ocean. The tower stands near the cliff’s edge, and Jameson identifies it as both a clock tower and a bell tower. Remembering that Rohan said the Game would begin anew with the bell’s striking, Jameson concludes that the key is likely hidden there.
Jameson races to the tower’s base, where a metal lattice door unexpectedly rises. Branford stands inside and claims that, unlike Ian, he does not shirk family responsibilities. Jameson suspects Branford’s change in behavior may be tied to Branford’s secret about having a son, but Jameson sets the question aside and enters.
Jameson climbs a narrow, rail-less staircase inside the tower while carrying the silver chest, with Branford following. Near the massive bell, Jameson first spots what looks like the key, then realizes dozens of keys are suspended on nearly invisible strings around the bell. Because the reachable keys seem too easy, Jameson assumes the true key will require a riskier move.
Branford physically tries to stop Jameson from attempting something dangerous. Before Jameson can act, a trapdoor opens above the bell and Zella drops onto it. Jameson judges the jump from the stairs to the bell possible but too risky while holding the heavy chest, so Jameson hands the chest to Branford and leaps.
