CHAPTER 2: JAMESON
Overview
Jameson and Avery’s romantic, risk-tinged escape at Iguazú Falls is cut short by Nash’s nine-one-one summons. The call pulls Jameson back into the Hawthorne family’s rules and rituals, shifting the story from private adventure to a collective obligation in London.
The chapter reinforces Jameson’s hunger for danger and Avery’s role as both partner and counterbalance, while establishing that Nash’s message is important enough to interrupt everything.
Summary
Jameson Hawthorne and Avery are at Iguazú Falls, standing close together at the edge of the roaring waterfall system. Jameson feels drawn to the danger and asks whether Avery dares him to climb or cross the railing, but Avery immediately refuses, grounding his impulse toward risk.
Later, at their secluded jungle villa, Avery approaches Jameson with a coin and a playful challenge. Their flirtation turns toward a card game and the private possibilities of being away together, but the moment is interrupted by the satellite phone.
The message is from Nash, invoking the brothers’ annual nine-one-one code: when one Hawthorne brother calls, all the others are expected to come, no questions asked. Jameson answers a call from Grayson and teases him about a previous punishment involving tight leather pants and karaoke, making clear that ignoring such a summons has consequences.
Avery takes the phone from Jameson before the teasing can go further. Recognizing that Nash’s summons cannot be ignored, Avery tells Grayson that she and Jameson will meet the others in London.
