CHAPTER 60: JAMESON

Overview

Jameson and Avery follow the poppy clue to a hidden cliffside staircase leading down to a narrow beach lined with caves. Their partnership remains charged but focused as they push past danger, attraction, and Jameson’s injuries in pursuit of the next key.

At the beach, Jameson identifies a partly tidal statue of a woman as the next likely clue, narrowing the search and moving them deeper into Vantage’s hidden trial.

Summary

Near the cliffside poppies, Jameson and Avery discover a staircase carved into the cliff, almost perfectly hidden and dangerously exposed, with no railing or room for mistakes. Jameson reflexively suggests Avery stay behind because of her dress, but Avery removes the dress to reveal a black slip and bra, making clear she will continue.

Jameson tries to keep his focus on the game despite his attraction to Avery and his battered body. Avery reminds him that finding one key will not be enough: they will celebrate only when they find all three.

Jameson and Avery descend the steep cliff stairs to a narrow gravel beach below. At low tide, several caves are visible, though Jameson realizes there may be many more hidden along the shore.

As Avery begins working through where to search next, Jameson spots a stone statue near the edge of the beach, positioned where it would be partly submerged at high tide. Jameson and Avery run to it, and Jameson sees that the statue depicts a woman. He turns the next move over to Avery with, “Ladies first.”
