CHAPTER 10: GRAYSON

Grayson finds Juliet “Gigi” Grayson in an interrogation room, oddly cheerful despite being held by police. She jokes about trying to move coffee cups with her mind and immediately treats the situation like a game. Grayson orders the officer to leave, then learns Gigi had assumed someone named Mr. Trowbridge had sent him.

Grayson decides to remove Gigi from the station before anyone realizes he has no official authority to do so. In the car, Gigi explains that Kent Trowbridge is a family friend and lawyer, and that she called him instead of her mother because her mother likely believes Gigi spent the night harmlessly at a friend’s house.

Gigi then guesses that her missing father, Sheffield Grayson, might have sent Grayson. She insists she was not truly breaking into a bank, only trying to reach the ultra-secure safe-deposit boxes. Grayson realizes Gigi has a key to a safe-deposit box belonging to Sheffield, but the box is under an unknown false name.

Gigi reveals that she found the key inside Sheffield’s computer and believes her father wanted her to discover it and use it to find him. She rejects the idea that Sheffield simply abandoned the family or ran off with another woman, describing him as a devoted father. Grayson knows painful truths he cannot tell her: Sheffield is dead, and Sheffield did cheat on Gigi’s mother, since Grayson is the result.

Grayson drops Gigi at her family’s home and warns her not to keep breaking into banks or behaving as if she is invulnerable. Gigi’s determination makes clear that she will not stop searching for the truth. When she asks his name, Grayson gives only his first name, and Gigi notices the suspicious coincidence that his first name is her last name.
