CHAPTER 46: GRAYSON
Overview
Grayson and Gigi head to the bank, where Gigi’s blunt curiosity forces Grayson to maintain the fiction of an imaginary girlfriend while she insists he is less detached than he pretends. Grayson plans to enter the bank without Gigi, but Savannah arrives and takes control of the situation. The discovery of Sheffield Grayson’s fake ID, bearing Grayson-like eyes and the name Tobias Davenport, deepens the mystery around Sheffield’s connection to the Hawthorne family.
Summary
Gigi drives Grayson to the bank, and Grayson quickly realizes that Gigi is a terrible driver. While swerving and ignoring his warnings, Gigi presses Grayson about Savannah’s silence after the party, Grayson’s disappearance, and the tense way both Grayson and Savannah reacted to Duncan’s interruption.
Gigi concludes that Grayson and Savannah must have a romantic history and that Grayson still loves Savannah. Grayson denies it and leans into his earlier lie about having a girlfriend. When Gigi asks about the girlfriend, Grayson invents details, describing a smart, unpredictable partner who surprises him and lets him stop trying to be perfect.
After Gigi accepts the girlfriend story, she still accuses Grayson of pretending to be stoic and insists that they have become friends. At the bank, Grayson focuses on the decoy key in his pocket and the real key around Gigi’s neck. Because Gigi would be recognized and could draw police attention, Grayson tells her that she cannot go inside.
Grayson persuades Gigi to hand over the key by invoking his Hawthorne confidence and asking for the chain as well, claiming it is for good luck. Before Grayson can proceed alone, Savannah appears and announces that she will go with him. Savannah reveals that she has given Gigi a fake ID connected to Sheffield Grayson.
Gigi hands the fake ID to Grayson before Savannah can stop her. Grayson notices that Sheffield Grayson’s photo has eyes like his own, then sees the name on the fake identity: Tobias Davenport. The name shocks him because Tobias is both Grayson’s middle name and the first name of his grandfather and uncle.
