CHAPTER 3: JAMESON
Overview
During the flight to London, Jameson’s restlessness becomes more sharply tied to a concealed incident in Prague. Avery senses that Jameson is hiding something dangerous and significant, but Jameson refuses to tell Avery what happened.
The chapter shifts the story’s tension inward, showing Jameson’s fear that his hunger for risk and greatness could lead him into recklessness. His secret about Prague becomes a looming mystery that complicates his relationship with Avery and his role beside her world-changing ambitions.
Summary
On the private jet to London, Jameson stays awake in the dead of night while Avery sleeps against him and Oren’s security team remains quiet nearby. The stillness unsettles Jameson because, without distraction, his thoughts drift toward Prague and an unresolved mystery he is trying not to face.
Avery wakes and notices Jameson’s expression, calling it “our look” because both Avery and Jameson are drawn to puzzles. Jameson wants to tell Avery what happened in Prague, but he fears that making it real would pull him into something reckless and dangerous. To avoid confessing, Jameson redirects the conversation to a true but safer subject: his restlessness as his gap year nears its end.
Jameson admits that he wants something more, something great and lasting, but he cannot define it. Avery reminds Jameson that they are already doing great things by giving away Tobias Hawthorne’s fortune, yet Jameson privately feels like Avery is changing the world while he is merely watching from behind the ropes.
Avery connects Jameson’s mood to their return to Europe, the first since Prague. Avery reveals that Jameson came home from Prague at dawn smelling of fire and ash, with a cut near his collarbone, and she asks why Jameson will not tell her what happened. Jameson knows Avery could force the truth from him with their agreed-upon code word, but Avery chooses not to, which deepens his struggle.
Rather than answer, Jameson moves closer and turns the tension into flirtation. Jameson tells Avery that if she wants, she can start calling him “Mystery Boy,” leaving the events of Prague unresolved.
