Six years earlier, Veronica (“Ronnie”) delivers her newborn son, Dominic, at home with the help of her friend Lola, avoiding the hospital for fear that authorities would deem her and Clay unfit. Exhausted but resolute, Veronica names Lola godmother and immediately thinks about medical care and costs Dominic will need.
