Chapter 19

Overview

Naomi arrives late to pick up Teddy and learns Jeremy has introduced him to Veronica, heightening Naomi’s distress. Jeremy defends Veronica and repeats an accusation that Naomi threatened her, dismissing Naomi’s objections. The encounter convinces Naomi that only hard evidence will challenge Jeremy’s trust in Veronica.

Summary

Naomi arrives at the former marital home to pick up Teddy and is immediately confronted by Jeremy, who insists she is an hour late. Seeing missed texts on her silenced phone, Naomi feels guilty, especially spotting Teddy waiting with his backpack and a new elephant toy.

When Teddy excitedly says “Ronnie” bought the toy, Naomi realizes Jeremy has introduced their son to Veronica. She pulls Jeremy into his office to protest. Jeremy, pressed for time and focused on work, is curt. Naomi breaks down crying, but instead of comforting her, Jeremy urges her not to do this before his meeting.

Naomi argues that introducing Veronica is confusing for Teddy; Jeremy counters that it isn’t a fling and that Teddy liking Veronica is good. He notices Naomi still wearing her wedding ring and disapproves. Naomi warns that Veronica is using him, but Jeremy praises Veronica and asks Naomi to stop bad-mouthing her.

Jeremy further claims Naomi followed and threatened Veronica at a supermarket. Naomi denies it, but Jeremy’s skepticism is clear. He leaves for his meeting, and Naomi recognizes Jeremy’s unwavering belief in Veronica.

Realizing argument won’t sway him, Naomi concludes she needs concrete proof of Veronica’s true intentions if she hopes to change anything.
