Chapter 22
Overview
Outside school pickup, Naomi vents to Cora about Jeremy’s push for custody to avoid child support. Cora encourages Naomi and offers help: her cop boyfriend can run Veronica’s license plate. Naomi sends the plate, choosing to investigate despite Ezra’s reassurances, prioritizing Teddy’s safety and sensing Veronica hides something.
Summary
Waiting at school pickup, Naomi confides in Cora about Jeremy’s attempt to gain custody, which Ezra believes is to dodge child support. Cora shares Naomi’s outrage and bolsters her resolve, even teasing Naomi about her new attorney while urging her to stay strong.
Naomi admits she wants information on Veronica, the woman Jeremy is seeing, but lacks even a last name. She has only a photo of Veronica’s New York license plate, which has yielded nothing useful through public searches.
Cora proposes a solution: her boyfriend, a police officer, can run the plate and uncover Veronica’s identity and background. Naomi texts Cora the photo, grateful yet wary of complicating Ezra’s legal strategy.
Despite reservations, Naomi decides the potential risks are worth it if Veronica will be around Teddy. Convinced Veronica is hiding something, Naomi commits to finding out the truth to protect her son and strengthen her position in the custody dispute.
