Chapter 53
Overview
Veronica quits her nanny job, secures a cheap apartment, and takes a low-wage café job to reposition her life near Jeremy. She deliberately engineers a chance to meet him on his running route, using charm and persistence. Jeremy notices her, helps her pace, and agrees to future runs, opening regular contact.
Summary
Veronica resigns from the Simington family, despite Rhona Simington’s pleas for her to stay and offer of a recommendation. Aware her past drug charge could hinder employment, Veronica prioritizes rebuilding stability while positioning herself closer to Jeremy Roth.
Within a week, Veronica rents a small basement apartment and finds work as a coffeehouse cashier. Knowing her savings are limited, she accepts low pay and relies on Rhona’s reference if needed.
Motivated to establish contact with Jeremy, she buys eye-catching running leggings and plans to encounter him on his regular trail. Although she intends to appear casual, her goal is to create opportunities without overtly seducing him.
Veronica arrives early at the park, spots Jeremy’s car, and starts a run but quickly struggles, revealing her inexperience. Jeremy notices her distress, approaches, and offers advice on intervals and breathing.
Seizing the moment, Veronica accepts his guidance. They walk briskly with short jogs, talk comfortably, and build rapport. Jeremy cites a sore knee as a reason to slow his pace, stays with her, and by the end they agree to meet for another run, establishing an ongoing connection.
