Chapter 33
Overview
Evangeline and Apollo’s wedding reception unfolds in a magical ice castle, but Evangeline’s hope is undercut by Apollo’s continued enchantment and Jacks’s absence. The arrival of Apollo’s estranged brother Tiberius exposes dangerous tensions in the royal family and nearly turns the celebration violent.
Evangeline prevents a fight and tries to use her new position to encourage reconciliation, while Tiberius tests her sincerity and hints that he knows more than he will say. His promise to explain his disappearance later adds another unresolved secret to Evangeline’s marriage and the larger mystery surrounding Apollo.
Summary
After the wedding ceremony, Evangeline braces for Apollo to stop loving her, expecting Jacks’s spell to break now that the vows are complete. Instead, Apollo holds her more tightly and treats her with reverence as they travel by silver sled, pulled by white wolves, to a temporary ice castle built for the reception.
Inside the ice castle, the celebration is lavish and enchanted, with mulled wine, green cakes, clockwork musicians, and smoky ghost foxes meant to bring guests gifts of love. Apollo publicly praises Evangeline as his beloved bride, but Evangeline remains tense because Apollo’s devotion still seems enchanted and Jacks is nowhere to be found.
During their first dance, Evangeline searches the crowd for Jacks and wonders whether his magic has failed, whether he has forgotten, or whether Apollo might actually be beginning to love her on his own. Apollo’s intense declarations convince Evangeline that the curse is still present, yet Evangeline lets herself enjoy the moment and hopes that Apollo’s feelings might become real.
The reception abruptly quiets when Apollo’s estranged brother, Tiberius, enters and interrupts the dance. Apollo immediately shields Evangeline and draws his sword when Tiberius suggests Apollo may be bewitched, revealing how volatile their relationship is and how dangerous Apollo’s enchanted possessiveness remains.
Evangeline steps between the brothers and uses Apollo’s affection for her to calm him, then accepts Tiberius’s request for a dance in hopes of encouraging reconciliation. While dancing, Tiberius studies Evangeline, questions whether she loves Apollo, and reveals enough concern for his brother to show that his antagonism is not simple hatred. Evangeline admits she once loved someone else but hopes to love Apollo even more.
By the end of the dance, Tiberius softens slightly but refuses to explain his disappearance yet, saying he does not want to spoil the night. He leaves after stealing a feather from Evangeline’s wings, leaving Evangeline with new uncertainty about the brothers’ history and the secrets Tiberius is withholding.
