Evangeline reaches Wolf Hall’s wedding suite and realizes she is trapped in a dangerous situation: the room is at the top of a tower, guarded by six soldiers, and she does not know how Apollo will react once Jacks’s spell is broken. Although she briefly considers delaying the kiss or leaving Apollo enchanted, she decides she must free Apollo from the false love before sunrise.

Inside, Apollo is waiting on the flower-covered bed, shirtless, oiled, and behaving in a way that makes Evangeline deeply uncomfortable. His enchanted desire removes Evangeline’s remaining hesitation. She drinks some unpleasant wine to steady herself, then approaches Apollo and kisses him with the Fate-blood magic Jacks gave her.

The kiss immediately changes Apollo. Apollo’s grip loosens, he pushes Evangeline away, and he looks around the room with anger, confusion, and humiliation. As Apollo processes the sudden loss of his enchanted love, his anger gives way to visible pain, and he asks Evangeline what she has done, saying he feels as if she has stabbed him in the heart.

Evangeline is stricken with remorse because she expected Apollo’s anger but not his wounded devastation. When Apollo grabs Evangeline’s hand and struggles to speak, Evangeline thinks he is trying to understand what has happened. Instead, Apollo suddenly turns gray, collapses, and stops moving.

Panicked, Evangeline checks Apollo’s chest and neck for a pulse but finds none. The skin around the tattoo of her name has turned blue, and Apollo does not respond when Evangeline shakes him. Evangeline realizes with horror that the kiss may not only have broken the spell but killed Apollo, and she fears Jacks tricked her into murdering her new husband.
