Chapter 40
Overview
Chaos demonstrates the dangerous power of vampire allure when Evangeline nearly falls under his gaze, forcing Jacks to intervene and reinforcing how vulnerable she is in the vampire court. Chaos reveals that his bronze helm is a centuries-old curse preventing him from biting, but Jacks still warns that Chaos remains unsafe.
The chapter shifts from tense negotiation to horror when Chaos brings Evangeline and Jacks to a scholarly room filled with shackled chairs and opens the view onto an amphitheater where vampires feed on humans. This reveals the court’s cruelty and raises the stakes of Evangeline’s attempt to get answers from Chaos.
Summary
Chaos greets Evangeline by taking her gloved hand, and Evangeline accidentally meets his eyes. Chaos’s vampire allure overwhelms her, making his gaze feel beautiful and irresistible until Jacks grabs her face and forces her to look at him instead. Jacks’s harshness breaks the spell, and Evangeline realizes Chaos’s eyes could have trapped her as Jacks warned.
Chaos teases Jacks for failing to prepare Evangeline and suggests Evangeline might prefer Chaos to Jacks. Evangeline, wary but needing information from Chaos, accepts Chaos’s arm. Jacks warns Evangeline in her mind not to get comfortable and says there is a reason Chaos wears the bronze helm.
Evangeline studies the helm and notices it covers Chaos’s mouth completely, which seems strange for a vampire. Chaos catches her looking and explains that the helm is cursed and prevents him from biting anyone, making Evangeline safe from him in one sense. Jacks confirms Chaos has been trapped in the helm for centuries, but privately warns Evangeline that she will never truly be safe with Chaos.
Chaos leads Evangeline and Jacks through more hostile halls into a candlelit room that first appears scholarly, filled with scrolls, books, pens, and parchment. Evangeline then notices every chair is fitted with thick shackles, some barbed, revealing the room’s threatening purpose. Jacks mocks Chaos’s hospitality, while Chaos deflects by bringing up something Jacks supposedly did with a princess named Diana, causing Jacks to tense despite denying knowledge of her.
Chaos opens curtains to reveal that the room overlooks an amphitheater below. Evangeline sees vampires dressed in red and humans dressed in white standing on a giant black-and-white board. After Chaos wishes them luck and grimly says he thinks of many of them as family, the vampires rush forward, seize the humans, and bite into their necks, showing Evangeline the brutal reality of Chaos’s court.
