Chapter 18
Overview
At Nocte Neverending, Evangeline enters an enchanted ball full of romantic promise but remains wary of Jacks, especially when she sees him turning his attention to Marisol. Apollo’s dramatic arrival first seems to reject and humiliate Evangeline when he chooses Princess Serendipity for a required dance. The chapter then reverses that humiliation into a major turning point: Apollo publicly proposes to Evangeline, and she accepts.
Summary
Evangeline and Marisol arrive for the first night of Nocte Neverending, where jugglers, acrobats, minstrels, mock sorcerers, and magical drinks make the celebration feel like a living Northern fairy tale. Evangeline is relieved not to see Jacks outside and hopes to find Prince Apollo before Jacks finds her. The enchanted arch bears the words May You Find Your Ever After, and as Evangeline passes beneath it, a whisper says it has been waiting for her.
Inside the castle ballroom, Evangeline sees doors labeled for chance, mystery, adventure, and love, along with a kissing chess game. LaLa appears in a fiery gown and explains the game, but Evangeline remains focused on locating Jacks and Apollo. Marisol does not appear beside Evangeline after the arch, which unsettles Evangeline.
Evangeline finally spots Jacks lounging with a black apple, then approaching Marisol, who looks delighted by his attention. Because Evangeline suspects Jacks is not acting by coincidence and fears Marisol could be used in one of his schemes, Evangeline decides she must protect her stepsister despite needing to avoid Jacks herself.
Before Evangeline can act, trumpeters announce Crown Prince Apollo, who rides into the ballroom dressed like a hunter from a Northern tale. Apollo declares that he will dance with only one girl, and his intense gaze makes Evangeline and LaLa believe he means Evangeline. Instead, Apollo first takes Princess Serendipity Skystead, humiliating Evangeline as the crowd laughs and praises Serendipity’s suitability.
While Evangeline tries to retreat, she hears a voice in her head that sounds like Jacks, telling her self-pity does not suit her. Then Apollo appears behind her, addresses her warmly, and explains that he had to ask one girl to dance because of the law, but could not dance with Evangeline without proposing. In front of the crowd, Apollo kneels and asks Evangeline to marry him, promising to make her his wife, princess, and queen. Feeling wanted in a way she has not felt before, Evangeline says yes.
