Evangeline reaches Marisol’s room still unsettled by the earlier burning of the scars on her wrist, though the pain has stopped. The door used to belong to Evangeline, and that reminds her of everything she lost while she was turned to stone, including her place in the house and her certainty about Marisol.

Before knocking, Evangeline hesitates because she still feels conflicted over Luc. Although Evangeline wants to let Luc go, she cannot completely stop wondering whether Marisol knowingly took him from her, or whether Marisol might take another love from her in the future.

Evangeline overhears Agnes cruelly insulting Marisol’s appearance and blaming her for failing to overcome her cursed reputation. Unable to listen any longer, Evangeline enters and sees how defeated Marisol looks, which makes Evangeline recognize Marisol as another victim of Agnes rather than a rival.

Evangeline announces that Empress Scarlett has asked her to represent the Meridian Empire at the crown prince’s Nocte Neverending ball in the Magnificent North, with travel, lodging, and clothing provided. Evangeline says she wants to bring Marisol with her, causing Marisol to brighten with hope.

Agnes initially appears disturbed and likely to refuse, but she unexpectedly approves the trip. Her overly sweet agreement allows Evangeline and Marisol to leave for the North together in one week.
