The northern wedding reception is expected to last until dawn, but Apollo grows impatient to leave the celebration with Evangeline. Because Apollo is still enchanted to adore her, Evangeline becomes anxious when he asks her to come to the wedding suite. She delays him with promises, then slips away to find Jacks and force him to uphold his bargain.

Evangeline searches the glacial castle and remembers seeing Jacks leave the main hall earlier while she and Apollo were introducing Marisol to eligible bachelors. Guests who went the same way returned pale and alarmed, making Evangeline suspect Jacks has been holding a frightening private court.

Evangeline finds Jacks in an icy throne room, where he is seated on a throne and being affectionately approached by a small white fox. Evangeline teases Jacks about the creature, enjoying his discomfort. Their banter turns tense when Jacks warns her against making more deals with Fates and reminds her that she still owes him one more kiss, saying she is his until he collects it.

Evangeline demands that Jacks undo Apollo’s spell now that she has completed her part of their bargain by marrying him. Jacks agrees more easily than she expects, though he calls the choice shortsighted. He cuts his finger with his jeweled dagger, producing gold-flecked blood, and tells Evangeline that his blood will give her the means to end Apollo’s false feelings.

Jacks presses the bleeding finger to Evangeline’s lips and explains that she must kiss Apollo before sunrise for the magic to work. Any false love Apollo feels will disappear, but Jacks warns that Apollo will not see the act as a kindness and that heroes do not get happy endings.
