Chapter 43
Overview
Jacks struggles against the vampire venom and the urge to bite Evangeline, forcing both of them to confront how close he is to losing control. Evangeline refuses to flee because abandoning Jacks could endanger others, and she finds a temporary solution by locking him behind a protected mausoleum gate. The chapter deepens the danger between Evangeline and Jacks while revealing that Jacks knows more about Evangeline’s blood magic than he will explain.
Summary
After Luc bites Jacks and infects him with vampire venom, Jacks orders Evangeline to leave. His fangs lengthen, his eyes darken, and Evangeline realizes he is close to becoming the very creature he despises. Although Evangeline fears being bitten, she refuses to abandon Jacks because he might attack another human before dawn.
Evangeline considers restraining Jacks, but Jacks rejects the idea of being pinned to a wall. Sounds from below suggest another changeling may be loose, forcing Evangeline and Jacks to flee Chaos’s lair together. Outside in the graveyard, Evangeline notices Jacks’s dangerous allure and understands it as part of the vampire venom’s pull.
Jacks repeatedly tells Evangeline to run, but Evangeline argues that Jacks might chase her or find someone else to bite. When Evangeline suggests using a vine-covered mausoleum protected by angels’ tears, Jacks resists until his control breaks: Jacks suddenly pins Evangeline against a tree with hot hands at her throat. Evangeline tells him to let go, and Jacks releases her at once, proving Evangeline’s fear is justified.
Inside the mausoleum, Evangeline finds an iron gate separating the entrance from the coffins. Jacks, barely holding himself back, tells Evangeline to prick her finger, use her blood, and ask the lock to open. The blood magic works immediately, though Evangeline is startled that Jacks knew how to use it.
Jacks moves behind the gate before Evangeline can question him and slams it shut, locking himself inside until dawn. The barrier is thin, and both Jacks and Evangeline recognize how little stands between them if Jacks loses control.
