Chapter 39
Overview
Evangeline and Jacks enter Chaos’s hidden vampire court beneath a cemetery, where Jacks’s warnings about vampires prove increasingly credible. Their tense partnership sharpens as Jacks uses possessiveness and fear to protect Evangeline in a place where humans have little power.
The chapter reveals that the mysterious helmeted figure Evangeline saw at the party and the spires is Chaos himself. This discovery moves Evangeline closer to questioning a key suspect or witness in Apollo’s murder, while placing her directly inside a dangerous vampire domain.
Summary
On a misty, snowy night, Evangeline and Jacks cross a rickety bridge to an isolated cemetery where Chaos, the vampire lord, hides his underground court. Missing posters bearing Evangeline’s likeness already cover the area, intensifying her need to question Chaos and clear her name after Apollo’s death.
As they walk, Evangeline asks Jacks about vampires. Jacks warns that vampires are ruled by bloodlust, that their stories are cursed to make people intrigued rather than afraid, and that looking into a vampire’s eyes can be treated as an invitation. Evangeline challenges his irritation and suspects jealousy, but Jacks insists vampires are dangerous and reminds her that his bites cannot turn her into what he is, while a vampire’s influence may be far more binding.
Jacks finds a vine-covered mausoleum guarded by broken stone angels and opens a hidden entrance by plucking a damaged harp string. Inside is a door with a glowing, inviting keyhole that seems to tempt Evangeline. Jacks warns her not to be dazzled because he still needs her for his purposes, and Evangeline pushes back, realizing she is less replaceable than he has claimed.
When Jacks demands to see Chaos and invokes an unforgiven debt, the door opens. A beautiful, predatory vampire guide appears, and Evangeline avoids his eyes as he reacts hungrily to her fear. Jacks speaks into Evangeline’s mind to warn her, then possessively holds her and bites her ear to convince the vampire that Evangeline is under his control, explaining silently that humans have no power here and that the vampire would control her if he thought Jacks could not.
The guide leads them deep underground through halls resembling Wolf Hall but increasingly marked by chains, shackles, cages, and signs of vampire cruelty. Evangeline grows sickened by the empty restraints and imagines human captives used as entertainment. When the guide vanishes with supernatural speed, Jacks realizes the situation may be unsafe and suggests leaving.
Before they can retreat, a hypnotic voice addresses Jacks and refers to cages as something Jacks once taught him to use. A helmeted vampire appears, and Evangeline recognizes him as the supposed soldier from the party and the spires. He corrects her, revealing that he is not a soldier but Chaos, and welcomes Evangeline to his home.
