Chapter 3

Overview

Evangeline discovers that Jacks stopped Luc and Marisol’s wedding by turning the entire party to stone, not by breaking any possible curse. When Jacks reveals that only a replacement victim can undo the spell, Evangeline chooses to sacrifice herself by drinking poison from a cursed goblet.

The chapter shifts Evangeline from desperate romantic to self-sacrificing hero, while exposing the terrifying nature of the Fates: they can grant wishes in ways that ruin lives. Her bargain with Jacks now has consequences far beyond a broken wedding.

Summary

Evangeline is horrified when the wedding party turns to stone. A gray bird begins pecking at Marisol’s flower crown, and Luc’s statue appears to twitch, as if Luc is trying to speak before the petrification fully settles.

Jacks appears in the gazebo, calmly eating an apple. When Evangeline demands that Jacks undo the curse, Jacks says he only did what Evangeline asked by ensuring the wedding did not happen. Jacks explains that a friend performed the magic and that the only way to reverse it is for someone else to take the victims’ place.

Evangeline notices a brass goblet marked as poison. Jacks warns that if Evangeline drinks it, no one will save her and she will remain stone forever. Evangeline hesitates, aware of the horror before her: Luc, Marisol, Agnes, Luc’s parents, the minister, and the others are all trapped because of Evangeline’s bargain.

Jacks tries to reframe the disaster as a benefit, saying Evangeline will become famous as the girl who lost her family to the Fates and may inherit money. Evangeline realizes that the danger of the Fates is not simple evil but their inability to distinguish good from harm.

Determined to correct her mistake, Evangeline picks up the goblet. Jacks warns that heroes do not get happy endings; they give them to other people. Evangeline drinks anyway, hoping that after saving Luc and the others, Luc will save her in return. The poison overtakes her, darkness fills her vision, and Evangeline hears Jacks’s final warning before everything goes silent.
