Chapter 45
Overview
Jacks survives the night without becoming a vampire, but the venom leaves him dangerously close to biting Evangeline and then collapses him into unnatural exhaustion. Evangeline’s legal situation worsens when wanted posters publicly accuse her of Apollo’s murder, forcing Evangeline to search for immediate shelter.
The chapter also sharpens Evangeline’s suspicion that Marisol may have poisoned Apollo, while Jacks’s final half-conscious confession reveals that Evangeline’s journey north was not accidental. Jacks deliberately arranged for Poison and the empress to send Evangeline to Nocte Neverending, deepening the mystery of Jacks’s larger plan.
Summary
After breaking free of the mausoleum lock, Jacks confronts Evangeline under the influence of vampire venom. He tempts Evangeline to use the dagger on him while his touch becomes increasingly intimate and dangerous. Evangeline recognizes that the venom is driving Jacks and that one bite could trap Jacks as a vampire, but Evangeline struggles to resist both fear and attraction.
Jacks nearly bites Evangeline’s throat, but Evangeline stops him by reminding Jacks that he needs Evangeline to open the Valory Arch. The reminder anchors Jacks long enough for dawn to arrive. As sunlight enters the mausoleum, Jacks’s heat and hunger vanish, leaving Jacks cold, awkward, and embarrassed rather than taunting.
Jacks gives Evangeline back her cloak with his usual cutting mockery, but Jacks leaves behind the jeweled dagger he had thrown at her. When Evangeline offers it back, Jacks tells her to leave it and exits. Evangeline chooses to keep the dagger without letting herself examine why.
Outside in the cemetery, Evangeline suggests sneaking back to Wolf Hall because Chaos’s information about malefic oil makes Evangeline suspect Marisol may have poisoned Apollo. Evangeline hopes Jacks can compel Marisol to tell the truth, but Jacks abruptly becomes exhausted, slurring, yawning, and nearly collapsing. Jacks suggests the sleepiness is a cost of the venom’s unearned power.
Evangeline discovers new wanted posters accusing her of Apollo’s murder and warning that Evangeline may be magical and dangerous. With Jacks almost asleep and royal soldiers a growing threat, Evangeline drags Jacks through the waking city while trying unsuccessfully to find LaLa’s flat. A mysteriously ringing bell leads Evangeline to a locked black door marked “Go Away,” and Evangeline uses Jacks’s dagger to prick her finger and magically open it.
As Evangeline hauls Jacks toward shelter, Jacks mutters that luck did not bring Evangeline there. Jacks reveals that he wanted Evangeline in the North and that Jacks asked Poison to save Evangeline and influence the empress to send Evangeline to Nocte Neverending.
