Chapter 50

Overview

Marisol confesses that she enchanted Luc out of jealousy and insecurity, but she denies killing Apollo, enchanting Tiberius, or framing Evangeline. Evangeline's sympathy leads to forgiveness and then to her own confession that she asked Jacks to stop Marisol's wedding. Instead of healing their bond, the truth enrages Marisol, who calls the guards and exposes Evangeline's hiding place.

Summary

Hidden in Marisol's room while soldiers remain nearby, Evangeline confronts Marisol about the spells. Marisol admits she used magic on Luc but insists she never enchanted Tiberius, killed Apollo, or framed Evangeline. Marisol argues that if she wanted Evangeline arrested, she could simply call the soldiers outside.

Marisol explains that jealousy drove her to magic. She envied Evangeline's freedom, confidence, and the affection Evangeline received, while Marisol felt pressured and belittled by her mother for failing to attract suitors. After finding a spell book among the books Evangeline had given her, Marisol chose Luc because Luc was kind to Evangeline and seemed like the sort of man Marisol and her mother would value.

Marisol says the spell became more powerful and miserable than she expected. She claims she tried to break things off after the second failed wedding but could not undo the spell without vampire venom or killing Luc, so she felt trapped between marrying him and leaving him suffering. Marisol also says she searched for spell books in Valenda to find a cure, not to hurt Evangeline.

Evangeline begins to believe that Marisol is guilty of using a love spell but not of murder. Seeing Marisol's remorse and recognizing similarities to her own guilt over Apollo, Evangeline forgives her and tells her she is not truly the Cursed Bride. This moment briefly suggests that the sisters might repair their relationship through honesty.

Because Evangeline believes Marisol deserves the truth, Evangeline confesses that she prayed to the Prince of Hearts to stop Marisol's wedding to Luc. Marisol reacts with fury instead of understanding, accusing Evangeline of selfishness and of letting her believe she was cursed. As Evangeline tries to quiet her, Marisol screams for the guards and reveals that Evangeline Fox is in her room.
