Chapter 10

Overview

Roan is tried by the Tri-Council for infiltrating the Book of Voyd’s chamber and claims the book evaporated into silver motes. He inadvertently exposes secret warding against moonfalls, provoking panic and political fallout. The Mindweft fails to breach him, and the Council moves to implicate King Kaan. Roan is condemned—fire-lashed and sentenced to the anthe—while the Burn’s ruler and Pyrok ready a desperate intervention within the Citadel.

Summary

In the Citadel amphitheater, Roan—shackled and gaunt—insists the Book of Voyd evaporated into silver particles that prowled away as he unbound it. The Tri-Council, led by the Grand Chancellor, doubts him, citing ancient runes guarding the chamber and suspecting a concealed theft enabled by Runi craft. The Burn’s ruler and Pyrok watch, restrained by the Citadel’s nulling and political risk.

Pressed on his motives, Roan says he sought to view unrendered pages and accuses the Council of hoarding knowledge. He then points out rumored invisible runes on the Citadel’s arches that protect against moonfalls, sparking panic and confirming a dangerous secret. Meanwhile, the attending Mindweft fails to penetrate Roan’s mental void and collapses, bleeding.

Seizing control, the Grand Chancellor orders an inquiry to King Kaan Vaegor, threatening revoked trade and lost favor if he does not comply. The Burn’s ruler walls off the heartspace to keep Rygun from sensing danger. The Council pronounces Roan guilty of treason, breaking and entering, and perverting justice.

Wardens strip Roan’s accolades and restrain him. The Grand Chancellor metes out fire-lashing, searing Roan’s back while the Burn’s ruler endures flashbacks of prior abuse yet holds position to avoid exposure. The sentence concludes with a decree that Roan be cleansed and fed to the anthe.

As the Tri-Council departs, Wardens drag Roan away. Despite Pyrok’s fear and anger—and the political damage Roan’s revelations cause—the Burn’s ruler accepts responsibility and decides they must stay inside the Citadel and follow the Wardens below, preparing a perilous rescue attempt.
