The Other

Overview

Possessed by The Other, Raeve reaches the Moltenmaw nest and acquires the moonshard, revealing it as a piece of The Other’s wing. In exchange, The Other rekindles life in the dam’s long-lost egg. She confronts Kaan with truths about Raeve’s guarded past and love, then relinquishes control, devastating him.

Summary

The Other leads Raeve’s body across the bog toward the Moltenmaw nest, unafraid of the wild dragons. Using ancient commands in Elluin’s perfected dialect, The Other petitions the God of Ground to raise stone steps, forging a path through the blistering mire toward a silver-glinting shard.

Reaching the nest beneath the slain mate’s petrified wing, The Other enters reverently. She discovers a warm but lifeless pink egg, sensing grief from the dam and neglect after the mate’s death. Remembering her own loss, she shares a luminous life-thread with the egg, turning it silver like Allume, and then lifts the cold shard—revealed as a piece of her former wing—as a “gift for a gift.”

The dam returns, ready to flame, but recognizes the exchange and, sensing life within the egg, settles to nurture it. The flock’s fire washes the mist and illuminates the runes scorched across Raeve’s skin, the Moving Mists gathering like wings behind The Other.

Kaan confronts The Other, asking what she is. She answers that she is neither living nor dead, once broken and now almost whole with the shard. Avoiding the deepest truth, she tells Kaan that Raeve would do anything for him and that she is guiding Raeve through painful memories, letting truths surface gradually, urging him not to push.

The Other thanks Kaan for loving Raeve as fiercely as she does, then releases control. Raeve’s body collapses into Kaan’s arms as The Other sinks away, and Kaan’s anguished scream echoes across the bog.
