Chapter 70
Overview
Pyrok wakes in Raeve’s hidden quarters and, worried for Gruffin, breaks Raeve’s rule by entering the upper suite. He is attacked by a red‑haired fae who believes Raeve died. Pyrok reveals Raeve survived and was taken to Dhomm, upending the fae’s belief and forging a potential new ally after she faints.
Summary
Pyrok wakes miserably in Raeve’s cramped lower room, still tasting the effects of her vomit runes and tending to the hatchling dragon, Gruffin. Hearing rhythmic tapping above the forbidden trapdoor, he debates Raeve’s condition not to enter but decides Gruffin’s safety outweighs the risk.
He ascends into a well‑appointed, black‑walled upper suite stocked with food, Runi tools, and comforts absent below, concluding someone lives here. As Pyrok investigates, a swift red‑haired fae ambushes him, knocking him down and holding a blade to his throat.
The fae interrogates Pyrok, sniffing him and recognizing Raeve’s scent. Convinced Raeve died by dragon execution, she presses the blade until Pyrok calmly explains that the king’s Sabersythe never intended to eat Raeve and that Rygun carried her north to Dhomm.
Confronted with Raeve’s survival, the fae’s fury crumbles into shock. She collapses, and Pyrok catches her head before it hits the stone, ending the scene with the revelation poised to reshape loyalties.
