Chapter 1

Overview

Kaan vows to restore the shattered Moonplume Slátra while grieving Raeve’s departure. He releases the waif Borg for news, trading a traumatic childhood memory for information that Roan has been jailed in Bothaim and will be tried for stealing the Book of Voyd in three days. Pyrok arrives with Lumo, whose terrifying vision warns of an imminent, widespread moonfall, escalating the threat to Arithia.

Summary

Kaan inspects the jagged holes in the fallen Moonplume Slátra’s shell, swearing to recover every missing shard. He wrestles with Raeve’s absence and Líri’s fading howls, then receives a lark from Terros updating that Rekk is being flown to Bothaim, where Raeve likely awaits her revenge.

Retreating to his suite, Kaan drinks and releases the bound waif Borg from a vial. Their fraught exchange exposes Kaan’s desperation for news and his refusal to let Borg or his brothers seek Elluin’s spirit. Bargaining for information, Kaan allows Borg to feed on a searing memory of childhood abuse by his father, Ostern Vaegor, who punished Kaan for his stutter and weakness.

Sated, Borg reports that Kaan’s alchemist, Roan, is imprisoned in Bothaim’s dungeon and will be tried in three days for allegedly stealing the Book of Voyd. Borg withdraws, leaving Kaan reeling at the prospect of political crisis and war.

Pyrok arrives at Kaan’s door with the young seer Lumo, who is shaken by a fresh vision. Cradled by Kaan, Lumo reveals a looming disaster: not a single moonfall, but many moons are about to fall. The chapter ends with Kaan confronting the compounded threats of Roan’s trial and a catastrophic, imminent multi-moonfall.
