Chapter 38
Overview
Raeve and Líri hunt through mountain meadows, kill a bhar, and revel in their feral bond. Drawn by Kaan’s scent and song, Raeve approaches him with a bloody offering, asserting desire and proximity despite territorial growls from Líri and distant Rygun. The scene cements Raeve’s slide toward instinct while tethering her to Kaan.
Summary
Flying low through a mountain gully, Raeve and Líri search for prey. Scent and movement reveal a large male bhar near a meadow of kitzus. Líri dives with predatory precision, crushing the beast’s skull on impact. Raeve and Líri feast, Raeve savoring the raw meat and the simplicity of their bonded, feral rhythm.
As they eat, Líri senses distant watchers. Raeve registers a potent, familiar male scent and hears a deep, enticing song. Through trees and steam from a spring-fed pool, Raeve spots Kaan bathing, his gaze and voice intensifying her pull toward instinct over thought.
Compelled, Raeve charges toward Kaan carrying a strip of meat as an offering. Líri growls a warning, echoed by a deeper rumble from Rygun perched above the clouds, but Líri ultimately submits and returns to feeding, allowing Raeve to cross into Kaan’s space.
The moment leaves Raeve anchored between wild hunger and longing: she remains near Kaan for protection and desire, even as her bond with Líri draws her deeper into an unthinking, predatory state.
